When Catherine, Princess of Wales, made her second appearance after announcing her cancer diagnosis at the weekend, Pippa Matthews was not far away. Kate’s younger sister is a rock for the future queen – and perhaps soon even an employee?
She looks up proudly at her sister, who is cheered with a standing ovation that lasts for several seconds. Pippa Matthews , 40, knows only too well how moving this moment is for Catherine, Princess of Wales , 42. After all, she and her mother Carole Middleton, 69, are two of the two most important people supporting Kate in her fight against her cancer diagnosis. And so it was no question for Pippa to accompany her older sister last weekend to her second official appearance after the announcement of her diagnosis – and to support her.
Kate appreciates Pippa Matthews’ loyalty
Together with Princess Charlotte , 8, the sisters attended the men’s Wimbledon final on Sunday, July 14, 2024 and had a great time watching the exciting match between Carlos Alcaraz , 21, and Novak Djokovic , 37. The women are extremely close and understand each other perfectly. Kate in particular appreciates Pippa’s unwavering loyalty more than ever after all the disappointments of the last few years. After all, her sister-in-law Duchess Meghan , 42, has brought several private disputes into the public eye and discredited Catherine in front of the eyes of the world.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, needs “quiet but tireless support”
Pippa Matthews, on the other hand, remains silent and remains Kate’s silent supporter. The fact that she has performed her role so brilliantly for years now has royal fans and royal experts wondering whether Pippa will be considered as Kate’s new lady-in-waiting in the future. “There is no doubt that Catherine and Pippa are close. Her presence together with Charlotte at Wimbledon was publicly supportive. We also saw Michael and Carole Middleton at Royal Ascot, which was a rare public appearance,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail, but also stressed that he could not imagine Pippa aspire to an official role such as that of a “lady in waiting”.
There is currently no indication that this is being planned. “It would also create enormous pressure and she has her own family with three children,” he added. “At the moment, the quiet but unwavering support that she and her parents undoubtedly provide is what Catherine wants and needs.”
“I think she will have to appoint some ladies-in-waiting”
Historian Kate Williams also stressed to “True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat: Back in Time” that Catherine will need more support when she is queen with the amount of attention and work. “I think she will have to appoint some ladies-in-waiting. I think traditionally you would expect Catherine to appoint her sister Pippa because Catherine is so close to her family,” says Williams, explaining: “She doesn’t have any companions because she is so close to her mother and sister. I think we can assume that Pippa is someone she could appoint.” Whether Pippa would want to take on this task is another question, however, as the mother of three also has “her own busy life”.
